rock57: Personal Thoughts on the new album

Hey there everybody. I'm interested in seeing what everybody thinks about the new record. My opinion: the best Starflyer album since "Leave Here A Stranger". I mean, that's saying quite a bit considering how good "Old" was, but I feel like this new album is a huge step forward for the band (and they really do sound like a "band" here). Don't get me wrong, I appreciate "Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice" but there's only about three songs from that album that I continually go back to. It sounded to me like Jason was running out of steam. It was a "tired" record to me. Graceful, but tired. Now, I'm not sure what happened over the course of the last two years, but it's almost like he's been hit with a jolt of energy. These songs actually "rock". Not in the sort of disappointing "Portuguese Blues" sense of the word either, but the kind of great pop sensibility that Jason displayed on "Leave Here A Stranger" and "Everybody Makes Mistakes", only with heavier drums. So what I'm saying is that it's really good.

What are your thoughts?

I haven't heard it yet, but I've loved the demos. I also absolutely love Talking Voice. I don't think it's tired at all. It seems like a breath of fresh air after Old.

i just got mine. i think this is actually quite similar to Portuguese Blues (which i loved) in it's simplicity but it just sounds kind of empty to me. it definitely doesn't have the lush sound without Lenz or Swift. there are a few songs on it i love, but overall as an album it sounds kind of rushed.
